World leader in the design and manufacture of ejection and crash worthy seats Martin-Baker recently contacted Midlands 3D to help with a novel challenge to 3D print 2000 model ejector seats for their visit to the Royal International Air Tattoo (RIAT) show.

Martin-Baker intended to exhibit a model fighter jet complete with working ejector seat in the Techno Zone of the RIAT 2018 show supporting the show’s support of STEM (Science, Technology, English, Maths) education area.  A combination of engineering skills, 3d modelling and ultimately our 3d printing service came together to create a truly interactive exhibition piece for all to enjoy.

A simplified ejector seat with integrated propulsion tube for compressed air was 3d printed to allow kids to attach a parachute and eject the seat from the model by means of a real ejector handle.  The low cost nature of the prints enabled Martin-Baker to also give away the seats to the kids as a memento of the experience and was a great hit!

“This is a great example of how our 3d printing service here in the UK can help clients produce cost efficient, bespoke products at scale using our volume 3d printing capability.  The balance between, delivery time, cost and volume meant we were able to put our printer farm to the test and we produced all 2000 ejector seats in less than 5 days”
