Our Commitment

We believe that it is every organisation’s duty, no matter what size, to act responsibly and with urgency to reduce our impact on the environment in which we live.

Sustainability requires us to take measures to avoid the depletion of natural resources to help maintain an ecological balance. At Midlands 3D we are inspired by the idea of and are taking steps to create a
Circular Economy business model. A model that designs out pollution and keeps materials in use by reusing and recycling.

In addition to resource efficiency, we are also taking several actions to minimise the overall impact of our business operations.

Reducing our environmental footprint

Up to 100% recycled content in our FDM plastics
Waste streams, such as plastic food containers and drinks bottles
100% Plant based plastics available (Biodegradable & Compostable)
Recycling where possible and reducing waste which might otherwise go to landfill

Sustainable 3D Printing

3D printing is widely acknowledged as fundamentally less wasteful than traditional, subtractive manufacturing techniques. Its ability to create complex, lightweight geometries not possible using other techniques can often simplify part design and production, further saving resources in the manufacturing process. Additive manufacturing is still an energy intensive process, but even so, because of its other benefits, according to an assessment by researchers from Delft University of Technology, Additive Manufacturing could still cut global energy use in the sector by as much as 27% by 2050.

Carbon Offsetting

To offset our energy use, Midlands 3D has been investing in environmentally sustainable projects globally since 2022 through our relationship with Ecologi.

These projects include turning waste biogas into electricity, reforestation and setting up renewable technologies in remote locations. This not only helps to offset our carbon but creates employment for families primarily in the developing World and goes some way to restoring wildlife habitats.

As a result, carbon emissions arising from production, transport and employee activity are now offset, harnessing a Climate Positive Workforce.

The Midlands3D Ecologi Profile Page visualises the commitment to global environmental sustainability, displaying our progress in real-time.

Recyclable Packaging

We are committed to reducing the environmental impact of our operations by increasing the use of recyclable packaging and packing materials wherever possible.

This includes the use of paper-based packing tapes and biodegradable packaging materials.

Recycled Materials

We are pleased to be able to offer a range of recycled filaments for our FDM printing service, and to recommend their use wherever practical.

Our FDM materials partner, Filamentive uses careful selection criteria in order to guarantee single-source waste streams, mostly from post-industrial waste, to create their filaments.

The positives outcomes of this production model include:

  • Minimising the amount of plastic being sent to the diminishing landfill sites
  • Avoiding consumption of the Earth’s finite oil stocks
  • Lowering energy demand compared to producing new, virgin polymers

In turn, we participate in the recycling of our own PLA waste, returning it to Filamentive for recycling into new filament.
